Offices next to the workshop
An office beside a workshop or warehouse picks up the noise of machinery, forklifts and trucks. Double glazing with an acoustic laminated pane, and well-sealed frames, makes a quieter space to work, take calls and meet customers.
Showroom glass
Large showroom windows let in a lot of heat. Low-E double glazing cuts the heat load on the air conditioning while keeping the display visible from the street.
Safety glass
Shopfronts, doors and low-level glass are places where the Australian Standard for glass in buildings, AS 1288, requires safety glass because of the risk of human impact (WFAANZ). We’ll specify toughened or laminated glass wherever it’s required.

Malaga is served by two primary roads, Reid Highway and Tonkin Highway, and district roads including Alexander Drive, Beach Road, Hepburn Avenue and Marshall Road.
WA’s road and rail noise policy looks closely at homes, schools, child care centres and similar buildings within 300 metres of strategic freight and major traffic routes, and within 200 metres of other significant routes (State Planning Policy 5.4).
What the guidelines use
The policy’s guidelines set out quiet-house packages that call for glazing such as 6mm-12mm-10mm double insulated glazing in bedrooms, with panes of different thickness, and seals on every edge of each window and a drop seal on doors (State Planning Policy 5.4 Guidelines). Those figures are a useful benchmark for anyone near a busy road, whether or not the policy applies to their home.
Acoustic glass
A laminated acoustic pane in the unit takes the edge off truck and highway noise better than standard glass.

Retrofit or new frames
If your frames are sound and deep enough, double glazed units can be retrofitted into them. If not, new frames with double glazed units are the long-term answer. We’ll tell you which your home suits.
Doors to the patio

Security
Laminated glass holds together when it breaks, which makes it a good choice for ground-floor doors and windows as well as for noise.
Windows are where most heat moves in and out of a building. Research reported in The Conversation found that up to 87% of a home’s heat gain on hot days comes through the windows, and about 40% of heat loss on cold days (The Conversation).
Summer
Perth averages around 26 days a year at 35°C or more, with January and February the hottest months. West-facing glass takes the worst of it in the late afternoon.
Low-E
A Low-E coating reflects more of the sun’s heat before it comes in. On west- and north-facing glass, it’s usually the biggest single improvement.
Winter
Perth’s July minimum averages about 8°C, and most of the year’s rain falls between May and September. Double glazing keeps the heat inside and cuts condensation on the inside pane.
Energy ratings
The Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS) publishes a U-value and an SHGC for rated windows. Ask for both on any quote so you can compare performance, not just price.
There’s no honest one-line price for double glazing. It’s worked out opening by opening, and these are the things that move it.
Home or business
Commercial frontages and large showroom panes are different jobs from residential windows, with different glass and hardware.
Size and type of opening
Small awning windows, sliding doors and large fixed panes all price differently.
Frames
uPVC, aluminium and thermally broken aluminium differ in performance and price. Retrofitting into sound frames avoids the frame cost.
Glass
Acoustic laminated glass, Low-E coatings and argon fill each add cost and each does a different job.
Access
Upper floors and hard-to-reach openings can need extra equipment.
